Brief History

Fr. James TG Hayes SJ, Superior of the Philippine Jesuit mission and the first Bishop and Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro, established Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan in 1933. The wooden two-story structure on Burgos Street, which had 17 male high school students attending it, grew into various structures with 614 pupils over the course of the following 11 years. The existing high school, the college department that was added in 1938 and offered courses in Liberal Arts, Education, and Commerce, and the Grade School that was founded in 1940 all contributed students to this enrollment. When World War II broke out, all of these were destroyed, forcing the institution to close on December 9, 1941.

Xavier Today

The five campuses where Xavier operates are the Jose Alvarez Technology Complex of the Center for Integrated Technologies, the High School and Grade School Annex in Pueblo de Oro, the Grade School campus in Macasandig, the Agriculture extension called Manresa Farm Complex, and the main Tertiary campus on Corrales Avenue.

The schools of Business & Management, Education, Graduate Programs, Nursing, Engineering, Agriculture, and Computer Studies, as well as the professional schools of Law and Medicine, are all located on the main campus. The Senior High School is now located on the main campus while a senior high school building is being built. The inhabitants of Northern Mindanao, its neighbors, and its students’ intellectual and spiritual needs are still being met by Xavier University.

A shortened version of the school’s old and new names, “Xavier Ateneo” (#XavierAteneo), became the institution’s social media handle in 2016. Additionally, it introduced the social media campaign “Experience Excellence at #XavierAteneo,” which highlighted the university’s vibrant student community, career options, and academic pursuits.

According to the 2016 QS University Ranking, Xavier Ateneo has placed among the best performing universities in Asia (Asia). Xavier Ateneo is still actively involved in education, training, research, and social development that advance the search for knowledge and truth, communication with religions and cultures, and stewardship of the natural world.

Green Campus

A chapel, which will be constructed between the north and south wings of the main structure, will be the focal point of the campus. The faculty, administrative, and maintenance offices will be located in the building that connects the two wings of the school. The new classrooms and offices will feature T5 and led lighting as well as an inverter-style air conditioning system to promote efficient energy use.

Both indoor and outdoor dining places will be available in their cafeteria for use by students, parents, educators, staff, and visitors.

The new campus’s chief architect, Ernest Martin Soriano, made sure that air could move freely inside the structures. He created the sky gardens to absorb sunlight and temper high temperatures while also acting as insulation.

Rainwater storage tanks will also be installed.
